§ 2.44.020. Fire marshal—Office created.

  • There is created the office of fire marshal, an executive office of the city. The fire marshal shall be appointed by the mayor with the consent of the council.

    The fire marshal is authorized to make inspections and investigations of all premises and buildings in the city and make recommendations for the prevention of fire and fire hazards. The fire marshal is empowered to enter any and all buildings and premises at any time for the purpose of making inspections and is authorized to serve written notice upon the owner or occupants to abate, with any specified time, any and all fire hazards which may be found. Any person so served with notice to abate any fire hazard shall comply therewith and promptly notify the fire marshal. The fire marshal is authorized to:

    1.

    Cause to be investigated the cause, origin and circumstances of fire in which property has been destroyed or damaged or in which individuals have been killed or injured, and to also make an investigation as to whether such fires resulted from carelessness or design.

    2.

    Inspect or cause to be inspected all buildings and premises as he deems necessary for the purposes of ascertaining conditions which may cause or spread fire, endanger life from fire or any violations of ordinances.

    3.

    Cause the correction or elimination of hazards or dangerous conditions which may cause or spread fire, endanger life from fire or any violations of any ordinances.

    4.

    Maintain or cause to maintain a record of all fires occurring within the city, a statistical analysis of such fires, records of inspections, permits and orders to eliminate hazards and to make periodic reports as he deems necessary to detail the operations of his office.

    5.

    Provide assistance as requested by the city.
